When you walk into the Fossil Butte National Monument Visitor Center in Kemmerer Wyoming, you enter another world--a world 50 million years or so in the past, in fact. Looming around you, incredibly well preserved fossils ( I mean scales, leaf viens, and skin, well-preserved ) transport you to a warm mysterious swamp. You almost get the sense that one of these peculiar creatures is sneaking up behind you. These things used to swim here. You can barely believe it, looking out to the windswept high elevation desert surrounds. But time has accomplished even stranger things.
As we developed this book, we set out to help kids explore topics that are sometimes challenging--e.g. million and billion year timelines, geology, and climate through time. We transformed the monument's primary interpretive themes into activities full of fun and wonder. Throughout the book kids time travel and use their imagination, connecting the fossils at the site with the real life creatures they once were.
